Free Homeschool Resources for All Ages

During this lockdown, many of us have had to resort to homeschooling our children and in my case grandchildren.  Not only have the kids been out of school they have also been relegated to staying inside for the most part, underfoot, bored, and looking for something to do.

I have found a few great free online resources that I have been using and I wanted to share them with you.

I recently discovered a free site that has lots of learning games for all ages.  The games are a bit old school and simple just like I like them. No loud noises, monsters or zombies, or violence just great educational fun. My daughter says they remind her of the games she played growing up in the ’90s.  I like it because I have found some games I enjoy too. Like word search and find the differences.

Calculators.org has nearly 100 free games from recognizing colors and shapes to Suduko with math operations.  All games in the free online arcade open in a new tab with no branding, navigation, ads, or any other distracting elements, so students can learn in a focused environment.

The littles love to play the math and word games. They are very easy to learn and provide a wide variety of learning.  There are so many games to choose from, the kids will never get bored. With 3 granddaughters at three different grade levels, I can find something for all of them on this site.  The youngest can work on letter and word recognition while the oldest can work on multiplication and division.

Another favorite here at Mimzy’s house is PBSKids.org.  There are tons of activities to keep the littles occupied and learning all day long. The activities are geared mostly toward younger children, the same age range that would watch the PBS Kids programming on TV.

Make sure to incorporate hands-on learning along with computer and book work. 

Do you have older kids or are you looking to expand your own knowledge during this lockdown?  Khan Academy is a great resource for this. Khan Academy is a non-profit whose mission is to provide a free world-class education to anyone, anywhere. This is more like a curriculum with lesson plans and resources than games. Khan Academy offers thousands of lessons in many languages to make access easier for students all over the world. In addition to Khan Academy, you should check out EdX. Edx is the place to find free lessons and lectures online from top universities including MIT, Harvard, Sorbonne, and Berkeley.
