When your children are all grown up, you know that something is going to come along very soon and scare you. After twenty or even thirty years of raising children and having them around your feet – or at least around the house – it can be such an odd feeling for them to all have flown the rest. Nothing quite prepares you for it. You can sometimes feel lost. And this can affect you mentally and emotionally if you aren’t able to deal with it quickly. Now, this isn’t going to be the answer for everyone, nor should it be something that you decide to go into without serious thought, but you might want to think about getting a pet. And namely, a puppy! Because dogs are a woman’s best friend. And so life alone doesn’t have to feel so lonely anymore. If this sounds like the perfect solution for you, here’s what you should do.
Do Some Research
First of all, you will want to look into what it’s like to have a dog. Or what kind of dog do you want? And if you have health concerns, this is especially important as you’ll want a dog that suits your lifestyle.  You’ll want to research what kind of dog you want so you know how to best look after them and you are aware of any illnesses or diseases they are most susceptible to. You will also want to search for Indy Veterinary Care  or other veterinaries local to you to compare insurance prices and their services. It’s also a good idea to do some dog sitting if you can, just so you can get used to what life with a dog is really like.
Dog Proof The Home & Prepare
Then the next job is to make sure that you are ready for life as a dog owner. For this, you might want to think of ways to get the home ready. Time dog sitting has probably taught you this. Then, you need to turn to professionals like dog trainers and veterinarians to get all your questions answered and to help provide the necessary screenings and health checks for your new puppy. From foot to grooming stuff and then toys and feeding equipment, ensure you have it ready.
Pick Your Pup
The next job is to pick your puppy. Now, there are a TON of different dog breeds that you’ll want to consider. And as you’ve done your research, you may know what you’re going to go for. But if you’re unsure, try a breed quiz or ask your friends for advice. Speak to other owners here too. And when you’ve made your decision, then it’s time to go and pick up your new pet and bring them home!
Find A New Rhythm
But then also, you’re going to want to get into a bit of a new routine here. Because having a puppy is somewhat like having a baby or a toddler. They’re so full of energy, that they aren’t in control of their bladder, and it takes them a while to learn to behave. So you need to not only have the patience for that but find a new routine that’s going to work out for you here. Spend a little time getting to know them and finding a new rhythm. And before long, you’ll be in the swing of your new life with a fluffy friend!

I’m getting ever closer to being an empty nester. But, with 2 dogs and 5 cats I suppose you might say my nest will never be empty. LOL

I prefer cats over dogs, but any pets are great for comfort and fighting loneliness.
I definitely plan on getting a dog or two when my babies leave the nest! I can see how they would really help with the loneness of your children being gone.
Thankfully I don’t have to worry about this for a few more years, but adopting a dog is a fantastic idea I wouldn’t have thought of. What a great way to enrich two lives!

This was nice to read because I just lost my dog Sandee I had her 15 years. My beautiful baby girl, daughter and best friend. I’ve always had a pet this is the first time I have ever not had an animal. I’m list, lonely, sad. I need my babies. Looking for another, I’ve always had rescues so I want to rescue another one but it has to be under 10 pounds because my back is so bad. Please pray that I find one soon. I am very much a cat person always have been but when I got my first little fluff ball when my kids moved out, I fell in love. There is nothing like the joy a dog has when you come home. I don’t think anyone has ever been as happy to see me just walk in the front door as my dog. My cat on the other hand sometimes acknowledges my existence and sometimes he doesn’t but that is what I love about my cat, that fierce independence combined with that melty ball of purr that snuggles under my chin.
