4 Twitter Tips for Building a Community

I love Twitter and have been managing Twitter accounts since its inception, years before I started this blog. So I wanted to share with you a few of my Twitter tips for building a community.

If you are a blogger or a business then you know followers are very important. Each account that follows you is a potential customer and you wouldn’t ignore a customer who walked in your store, so why ignore a follower. Unlike in real life (IRL) when you are being followed don’t run, follow back. If someone follows your Twitter account follow them back unless of course they are some weird porn site or a webcam girl .

If someone stops following you, then you run. Run right over to your account and unfollow them. Twitter is a tit for tat world so that means you give what you get. If someone unfollows you then you reciprocate by unfollowing them. If someone retweets (RT) you then you go visit their timeline and retweet one of their tweets.

Always favorite, retweet, or respond to every tweet you are mentioned in unless you are being trolled. In which case, feel free to use the report, mute, or block settings that twitter has.

To grow a twitter community, not just followers, make sure you interact. Twitter is not just another place to share your blog post, your product, or your favorite quotes, it is a community. If you want to keep followers and gain more then you need to interact with others on Twitter. Join Tweet Chats, Twitter Parties, Giveaways, and timeline discussions. Twitter is a conversation with your followers. Let them know about your products or posts but take an interest in theirs also. You should follow the 80/20 rule. 20% of your tweets should be about you and your posts/products and 80% should be about your followers. Retweeting them and sharing information you think they would be interested in such as news stories, video’s or coupons you find.

  1. I love being a twit, er, I mean, being on Twitter, and this is a great post. 🙂
Dropped by from Blogger’s Pit Stop, but always glad to be here. 🙂
Hope this weekend is treating you kindly. 🙂
    Shred. 🙂

    1. Yes, Twitter is something you have to do daily or at least find a program that will send out a tweet daily if you want to keep your followers.

  2. These are great tips. I must appy to following all of them! Quick question – do you have any thoughts about the following to follower ratio? How good/bad is it to have more of one of the other?

  3. While I’m not a blogger looking to grow my community, these sound like good tips for that. And everyone can use them, really, to grow on Twitter.
